Install your Mac apps
in one script.

Homebrew is the most popular tool for installing Mac apps from one place, without dragging icons around. Your script installs it for you if you do not have it yet, then installs the apps you chose.

Yes, and you should. The script only installs Homebrew (from its official website) and the apps you picked — nothing else. Nothing is sent anywhere. To read it, open the file in TextEdit, or press “View files” on this page.

$ open -e ~/Downloads/install.sh

It is in your Downloads folder (open Finder, then Downloads in the sidebar). If your browser saved it somewhere else, drag the file into the Terminal window after typing “bash ” and press Return — Terminal fills in the location for you.

Homebrew installed but Terminal has not learned about it yet. Close Terminal, open it again and try. If it still fails, run these two lines once (on a newer Mac with an Apple chip):

$ echo 'eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> ~/.zprofile$ eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"

On an older Intel Mac, replace /opt/homebrew with /usr/local.

That is fine — the rest still installs. If you already put an app in your Applications folder by hand, Homebrew may skip it. You can run the script again any time; it only adds what is missing.

Open the App Store app and sign in with your Apple ID before you run the script. Homebrew cannot sign in for you.

Run this whenever you like. It updates every app and tool you installed this way.

$ brew update && brew upgrade

Use its Homebrew name. You can see the exact command in the hover card of every app on this page. For example, for Google Chrome:

$ brew uninstall --cask google-chrome

Press “Download Brewfile only” and run it like this. It does the same installs, but expects Homebrew to be installed already.

$ brew bundle --file=~/Downloads/Brewfile
